Local Honey!

World Bee Day has been and gone and so have our worker bees who have done their job and are now off to serve the next flowers! We do get a little honey from the apple blossom which is light and delicious and apparently excellent for hay fever sufferers. Local honey in general is the best for you as it mimics the pollen you live nearest to as well as being totally natural.

Our trees are now moving from flower to full leaf. Read more below about how our leaves are the essential motorways and arteries for keeping our apples growing and our trees healthy.

A Room With A View!

Bare branches exploded with bud, then flower and now it is the turn of the leaf to burst into action with their signature light pale green eary leaf – watch how this leaf changes through the summer into a deep dark green.

Why do apple trees need leaves?:

Apple trees need leaves for photosynthesis. This is how plants convert light energy into chemical energy that can be stored in sugars and other organic molecules. Leaves are the primary site of photosynthesis in plants. They contain chlorophyll, which absorbs light energy from the sun and uses it to drive the chemical reactions of photosynthesis.

Leaves are also the main arteries and highways for transpiration – regulating water and nutrient loss from the tree. They do this through tiny pores called stomata, which allow water vapour to escape from the leaves. Without leaves, apple trees would not be able to regulate their water balance properly and would suffer from dehydration. Without healthy leaves, apple trees would not be able to produce the energy they need to grow and produce fruit and would not be able to transport vital nutrients and water to where it is needed.

You can tell a lot about the tree from the leaf. We constantly inspect our leaves and test them for the right balance of micronutrients like Magnesium, Boron, Phosphorus and Calcium to name but a few. The aim is to have everything in balance.
